Welcome to Ragdoll Cats
Ragdoll cats are a cat owner’s dream come true. They are beautiful, sweet, loving, playful, and think the world of their owners, as devoted to them as dogs are reputed to be.
Bulky, handsome, gentle giants, they are calm, even-tempered, and completely non-aggressive.
Ann Baker, a cat breeder, introduced the Ragdoll cats in the early 1960s. Initially, there were three colors, but today, through selective breeding, color patterns have expanded considerably.
The Ragdoll’s Appearance
When fully grown, they are big, fluffy-looking cats, the male averaging about 20 pounds and the female about 14 pounds. Some Ragdoll males are reputed to weigh as much as 30 pounds. The Guinness Book of World Records named a Ragdoll cat as the biggest domestic cat in the world.
These cats come in a variety of color patterns: cream point, red point, lilac point, chocolate point, blue point, and seal point.
Hair is medium or long, usually silky, and rarely matting. They require little grooming and shed only a little. Owners have described their fur as soft and fluffy like a rabbits.
Ragdolls have bright blue eyes, large heads, wide cheekbones, broad chests, and big, round paws.
The Ragdoll’s Personality
Ragdolls are like little Buddhas. They are quiet, usually only meowing to remind owners about mealtimes, loving, enjoying snuggling up to their owners, and placid, sitting in a calm and dignified way on beds, couches, and carpets.
Since they are not aggressive, having no interest in territorial fighting, pouncing on small birds, swiping owners who rub them in the wrong way, or other behavior typical of cats, they should not be let out of the house.
Like dogs, more than cats, they like to play, actively enjoying a variety of toys. They also like following the owner around the house and paying attention to what they are doing. And, like dogs, they think people are wonderful and their owners the best people in the world. They generally behave in a very devoted way, and are perfect companions for children.
They especially enjoy being rolled on their backs and having their belly rubbed.
